Better Than Mud

A Literary Portrait of Charlie and Lois Carlson

Better Than Mud is an original children's picture book inspired by the spirit, humor, generosity, and rural traditions that Charlie and Lois Carlson shared with their community.

Set in the real historic village of Kirk's Mill and populated by fictional characters—including Uncle Charlie, Aunt Lois, Elsie the cow, and a lively group of children—the story celebrates values that transcend any single generation: kindness, playfulness, community, imagination, and belonging.

This book is intended not simply as entertainment for children, but as a work of cultural preservation. It invites today's families to encounter the warmth and generosity that made Charlie and Lois beloved figures in Chester County, ensuring that their legacy continues through story rather than memory alone.
